10 Mora of Sweden
Country: Sweden
Rating (2022): 4.6
Mora of Sweden is the product of a merger between two very old companies, Frosts Knife Manufacture and KJ Eriksson, founded in 1891 and 1912 respectively. Possessing a huge stock of developments from both sides, the newly-made brand instantly acquired individual features, putting a compromise between cost and quality indicators at the forefront.
Judging by the reviews of some consumers, devoted fans of Mora of Sweden believe that nothing better than these knives exists. The only problem is that the company has few of them in Russia - other users call it nothing more than good. And yet you can get hunting knife models here. For example, Mora 2000 NeverLost Edition, designed specifically for hiking and loot cutting needs. The hardness of the blade, made of Sandvik stainless steel, is 57 HRC - not enough (relative to competitors), but these things have little effect on quality. The second order is Mora Knife Clipper 860MG, with the same default hardness values, but with a much more extensive base of actions.
9 helle
Country: Norway
Rating (2022): 4.7
The Scandinavian company Helle was founded in the 1930s in the small provincial town of Holemdal, from where it later moved to the capital of Norway (the city of Oslo), and later completely captured more than 80% of the knife market in this country. Its products did not have striking distinctive features - at first, everything produced could be confused with Finnish and Swedish knives that have the same Scandinavian features. However, after a considerable period of time, Helle still managed to come to the only right decision, directing mediocrity and ideas about the Nords in the right direction.
Without trying to invent something outstanding in the future, the brand began to place a special emphasis on the severity of the Scandinavian features, using, for example, deer antlers as a material for the handle, artificially aging and giving the blade a more “evil” shape. As a clear example of the company's hunting knives, we can single out the BraKar H-90 models with a 12.6 cm long blade, as well as the Fiskekniv H-62, which looks like a stiletto, which reaches a good 15.5 centimeters in length.
8 cold steel
Country: USA
Rating (2022): 4.8
Cold Steel is a company founded by notorious martial artist, edged weapon expert and knife designer Lyn Thompson. A good start in the form of a competent leader gave the company a clear advantage among the then startups, thanks to which it managed not only to survive in a competitive environment, but also to show significant growth (even against the backdrop of eminent competitors).
The main advantage of Cold Steel knives, judging by user reviews, is the ability to withstand large overloads without causing a break in the locker mechanism (in the case of folding knives), bending and destruction of the blade part, as well as the handle. As an inexpensive model of a hunting knife, domestic consumers often use the TRUE FLIGHT THROWER tactical sample, which has a comfortable nylon braided handle, as well as a long tanto-type blade with a hardness of around 58 HRC. But in the premium preference is given to the folding TALWAR 5.5, nominally tourist, but suitable for performing all functions in the hunting process.
7 Ka bar
Country: USA
Rating (2022): 4.8
The official name of the combat knife, developed by the American firm Tidioute Cutlery Company, gave the name to an entire brand specializing in the production of this model. It is actively bought up by lovers of military subjects and hunting, having up to a dozen different variations in the geometry of the cutting part, blade length and handle configuration.
In terms of origins, the standard Ka-Bar knife has:
- blade length 178 millimeters;
- blade thickness and width of 4.2 and 32 mm, respectively;
- elliptical typesetting handle (wooden or with leather slip);
- striped thin guard;
- rounded (in custom versions - hexagonal) heel on the handle.
Such a knife is usually made of steel with a hardness of 60-64 HRC, which is an excellent indicator. Considering the various options here does not make much sense. Whatever the intention of the industrial creator, this is still the same Ka-Bar - with low cost, excellent ergonomics and unforgettable features of the legendary weapon.
6 Gerber
Country: USA
Rating (2022): 4.8
The company, whose history began in 1939, was one of the most motivated for the selfless and, of course, good goal - to produce knives of extra-high quality sharpening. Actually, the ideological founder, Joseph Gerber, had everything for the implementation of a promising idea then. And even more: along with the nominal quality, consumers also appreciated the artsy design, which, at that time, was served in abundance in knives.
Balancing on the verge of creating advanced and not oversaturated models, the company began to conquer America, and then the rest of the world. A separate brand Gerber Bear Grylls was launched, producing tourist and specialized hunting knives (for example, SURVIVAL PARACORD KNIFE with a fabric sheath, holster and blade made of 5Cr15MoV steel), multi-tools, machetes and excellently designed camping axes. The main department, however, received more freedom in the production of knives for the masses, suitable for both domestic use and hunting needs. One example of such a model is the EVO LARGE knife with a tanto blade, which is lightweight (85 grams), excellent balance and a very high-quality selection of steel for the blade part (7Cr17MoV).
5 Silver Stag
Country: USA
Rating (2022): 4.9
The Silver Stag company is not so noticeable in the circles of such giants as conditional Kershaw, Spyderco and Benchmade, however, it supplies some of the most worthy models of hunting knives to the market.All of them are made exclusively by hand, bypassing even the procurement conveyor stages, which is why (like any other manual work) they are very expensive. However, this is not the only feature of Silver Stag knives: the most interesting thing is that craftsmen use only deer antlers in the production of handles.
Since the company does not differ in the scale of production, in Russia their products can only be found in specialized stores (or ordered at large trading floors). As for illustrative examples, an infinite number of hunting knives can be cited as such, fortunately, the number of series and models in them exceeds all expectations. Let's note two equivalent samples: Damascus Dagger with an original pattern on the blade part, as well as Gamer Elk Stick, created in the image and likeness of swift hand-to-hand knives of the original form.
4 Kizlyar
Country: Russia
Rating (2022): 4.8
The domestic company "Kizlyar" was founded in 1998, continuing the policy of continuity in the manufacture of edged weapons of old models. In addition to knives for domestic use and defense, they are engaged in the development of souvenir goods (checkers, sabers, daggers, etc.), separating them from almost 60% of the total number of production products.
The main feature of the Kizlyar hunting knives is the presence of an engraved (or etched) pattern on the blade part. In addition, the finishing of models always borders on the concept of "rich", and consists in the use of very high quality materials.In addition to high-strength stainless steel (with a hardness in the range of 57-60 HRC), hard and very expensive types of wood are used, as well as genuine leather for making a holster. As worthy examples, we can cite the Berkut models (with and without blade design at the consumer's choice) and Isma X12MF, which belongs to the category of edged weapons.
3 Benchmade
Country: USA
Rating (2022): 4.9
A titled manufacturer of folding knives, which managed to earn fame as the most reliable for a negligible (by market standards) time spent in the segment. Founded in 1988, this manufacturing enterprise at one moment gained worldwide popularity, a significant role in which was played by the high quality of the materials used and fundamentally new blade fixation mechanisms.
Initially, only butterfly knives were produced under the Benchmade brand (a tribute to which is fully reflected in the logo), but market trends tempted the young manufacturer to start producing folding models. The result of this decision was the birth of such well-known knives as GRIPTILIAN and PARDUE AXIS SPEAR POINT FOLDER, successfully used in the field of hunting. In both cases, 154CM steel was used as the blade material, the hardness of which is at least 60 HRC units. Both models are quite expensive, but fully pay off the cost of service time.
2 Buck
Country: USA
Rating (2022): 4.9
The first mention of the Buck company dates back to 1902, when a talented blacksmith apprentice named Hoyt Buck managed to modernize steel hardening and made the first knife under his humble name.Much later, in 1965, this company was able to make a major breakthrough, becoming a full-fledged international corporation. Today, Buck is famous for producing a huge number of knives for various applications in a wide range of price categories.
From the hunting series from Buck, more than a dozen knives can be distinguished, which at various times have achieved the title of market bestsellers. Now, as an illustrative example, let's pay tribute to the 536 Open Seasons and Customizable 110 models - very convenient folding knives designed for cutting prey and solving elementary tourist tasks. A notable feature is that when ordering from a dealer, the user himself can assign the material and type of the blade part. Such a custom upgrade is not too expensive - however, like the knives themselves. By default, all models, without exception, have blades made of 420HC steel - which holds a sharp cutting edge well, but needs sharpening from time to time.
1 Spyderco
Country: USA
Rating (2022): 5.0
Spyderco is an outstanding American manufacturer, which got into the rating thanks to a purely original approach to the shaping of the blade part. Actually, this moment has become a full-fledged hallmark of the brand - it is simply impossible to confuse its products with any other.
As for the opinions of consumers, Spyderco leaves only positive emotions associated primarily with a competent ratio of high quality and low prices. They are loved to be taken specifically for hunting, which is explained by the high level of comfort in use, as well as the magnificent appearance (and the inner confidence that goes with it).Leaving aside the more “monumental” models, we will give as an example of their products the Police folding knife (VG-10 steel with a hardness of 62 HRC), as well as the RONIN 2 fixed wide blade cutter (original Carpenter CTS steel - BD1 with a hardness of 60 HRC). They are inexpensive, ergonomic, and ideal for camping, skinning and knife hunting for large game.
