TOP 5 best polymer clay companies

5 Malevich

The best for making children's casts. Self-hardening
Country: Russia (produced in China)
Rating (2022): 4.0

Not everyone is looking at polymer clay to do applied art. Savvy parents got used to making molds of the arms and legs of their kids from this material as a keepsake. If the material is fresh (it is better to check the production date before purchase), it is well kneaded in the hands, so it will not be difficult to make a print in it. It is packaged in large packages weighing 500 g, but is presented only in white and red. The manufacturer offers to paint in the desired shades on their own by adding ordinary paints.

The mass does not require firing, since it hardens to a solid state at room temperature during the day. Because of this property, you need to work with him quickly, which is inconvenient during classes with children. Nevertheless, if the child already has experience in modeling plasticine, then Malevich will definitely cope with self-hardening clay. In general, many people like the material, it’s a pity it’s not so easy to find it on sale.

4 Artifact

domestic manufacturer. Suitable for sculpting dolls
Country: Russia
Rating (2022): 4.3

It is not easy for a Russian firm, and even such a young one as Artefact (it was founded in 2000), to compete with foreign enterprises. But judging by the growing demand, the number of positive reviews and the widest assortment presented in each store, she succeeds. Its products are polymer clays. Artifact, Sonnet, Lapsi and Tsvetik, with each brand represented in several collections designed for both professionals and children.

In consumer reviews, the authors are pleasantly surprised at the quality of domestic material, in particular, they note excellent plasticity, no shrinkage and cracks during baking, and a long shelf life when printed. Among the admirers of "Artifact" there are also masters in modeling author's dolls. They use 250g packs of classic body clay for faces, arms and legs and confirm that the material is beautifully sculpted and looks very natural when finished. But with the transfer of images to its surface, things are a little worse - clay does not accept the drawing well. It is important to strictly observe the temperature regime of processing - if it is not observed, the workpieces will crack.

3 Cernit

High density and strength of finished products. Ideal for florists
Country: Belgium
Rating (2022): 4.5

They say different things about polymer clay of the Cernit brand - someone scolds her for being hard up to coloring, and it takes a lot of effort to soften it, and someone calls it the best material for professional use. The truth, as always, is in the middle. If the master has already worked with various thermoplastics and knows the secrets of how to achieve maximum plasticity in a short time, then he will surely like Cernit. It is inexpensive, which reduces the cost of production, is presented in beautiful colors and does not require the use of a frame, since it is very durable in itself.

Due to the increased density, fingerprints do not remain on the mass, and with proper baking, the clay is not afraid of falling. What is surprising, while it remains very flexible, and the elements are very realistic. These are ideal characteristics for sculpting small details such as flower petals. There is only one problem: after heat treatment, colors can change their shade, and judging by the reviews, this happens quite often.

2 Sculpey

The best ratio of price and quality. Interesting effects
Country: USA
Rating (2022): 4.8

The first acquaintance with modeling is better to start with Sculpey polymer clay from an American company. Firstly, it is cheaper than the products of the leading brand in this rating, and secondly, it is practically not inferior to it either in the richness of shades or in the ease of mixing and shaping. Of course, a beginner can take material even easier - from domestic producers, but there are no guarantees that he will cope with it and, as a result, will not be disappointed at the very beginning of his creative path.

Finished products from "Scalpi" are colorful, hard, shiny, subject to the temperature regime, they do not crumble. Sculpting and then admiring them is a pleasure to which you want to return again and again. The bestsellers on the market include polymer clays such as the Bake and Band and Accents set for kids aged 8+.The "Accents" line includes universal plastic, represented by 24 rich shades with various effects - from imitation of semi-precious stones to metallic and translucent textures. In the reviews, there is only one complaint about them - they are spent too quickly.

1 FIMO

The most popular manufacturer Huge variety of species
Country: Germany
Rating (2022): 4.9

The Fimo trademark is considered the founder of the industrial production of polymer clay. Its founder was lucky to buy the thermoplastic formula from the inventor, the famous master of theatrical puppets Fifi Rebinder in the 30s. From the moment of its appearance in stores around the world and to this day, Fimo is considered almost the best quality material, among the advantages of which are a chic color palette, many types with various effects, ideal pliability and plasticity.

Especially a lot of positive feedback needlewomen leave about Fimo-Soft. The plastic is initially hard, but quickly softens in the hands, and after baking it perfectly holds its shape and does not crack. Masters who specialize in sculpting dolls and sculptures prefer other products of this company - Puppen and Professional doll art. They are characterized by a special flesh color in several shades, a semi-matt effect and a greater elasticity of the finished product. However, it is quite difficult for beginners to work with him, and the cost may not suit you. In general, all Fimo products are quite expensive (a piece weighing 57 g costs about 200 rubles), and this is probably its biggest drawback.

I would like to add from personal experience with different brands of clay. Just the same, the prints on the clay are practically invisible on the Artifact. But Fimo and Cernit are sticky clays. And the prints on them are quite difficult to remove. The same applies to the nuances of sculpting small parts. With equal proportions and the same diameter, one Artifact copes. Foreign plastics flow and reach for tools and fingers. Cernit is an excellent clay for sculpting flowers. But in work in other techniques it is problematic to use it. I would advise you to choose Fimo or Artifact. If you want to get accurate drawings or figurines.
The Artifact, by the way, has clay with a translucent effect. It's called Chiffon. There is a large selection of shades. This series is designed for flower growers. And it feels no worse than Cernit, only cheaper.
