It seems that mankind during its existence has created a huge amount of text and graphic materials. We have inherited a voluminous legacy of fiction, graphics and more. But over the last hundred years, technology has jumped so much that the amount of new information almost exceeds all that has been accumulated before. Of course, in the age of universal computerization, it is undesirable to use physical media - electronic versions rule the ball. Something is initially created in digital form, the other has to be digitized in various ways.
The simplest option is scanning. Our rating will focus on the most simple and familiar to the average user models for scanning documents, books, magazines, photographs, etc. Devices of this kind will be useful in several areas at once: for a home user to digitize memorable photographs, for office workers to create an electronic copy of documents, for photographers to receive a digital photo for subsequent retouching.
Top 10. Epson Perfection V600
The tablet model is aimed at advanced users, as it scans transparent materials and is literally stuffed with innovative technologies. Among them are Digital ICE, Ready Scan LED, Color Restoration, Epson Creativity Suite, ABBYY FineReader Sprint.
- Price: 27029 rubles.

The scanner helps to digitize a family photo archive from paper photos, films and slides. Due to the photo scanning function, the device turned out to be weighty - twice as heavy as classmates, so it was placed in a rectangular case with bevelled corners. For convenience and quality of work, the photo scanner was equipped with many proprietary technologies. So, the Digital ICE function effectively removes traces of dust, scratches, wool from the image that can accumulate on the surface of the original, thereby significantly reducing post-processing. Another feature of the device is also interesting - the ability to scan old photographic films and restore color. The Epson Creativity Suite proprietary software allows you to do this.
- Multi-format
- Digital ICE Technology
- Source alignment function
- Convenient background correction software
- High quality color scans
- Flimsy film holder

Top 9. Espada QPix MDFC 1400
A budget product from an OEM brand that has taken care of a high level of production control and service support in Moscow. There are enough reviews about it to judge acceptable quality and functionality sufficient for the home.
- Price: 10550 rubles.
- Country: China
- Resolution: 3200x4000
- Interface: USB
- Colour: 32 bit
- Scan time: 3 sec.
- Dimensions, weight: 91x104x105 mm, 0.32 kg
- Features: digitization of scans and photos from 35 mm films
A flatbed scanner specializing in digitizing images from film media, a great option for the home, where they are still preserved. The performance is amateur, the quality of the scans is significantly inferior to the files obtained from professional equipment, but the cost is appropriate. PC connection is not required, but there is a USB input for recharging. To copy pictures, you must first save them to SD. There is no need to cut the film into fragments, which is also a plus, but the holder does not straighten it completely, users have to come up with adapters from two glasses. The resolution can be considered acceptable - the graininess remains, but it shows that this is an old-school photograph.
- autonomy
- Color screen preview
- Good film scan quality
- There is Russian language in the menu
- Matrix 14 MP with interpolation up to 22
- Low native memory (128 MB)
- Transferring files via SD card
- Distorted colors

- Features: IT 8 calibration slide included, hardware dust removal
The main difference between the OpticFilm 8200i Ai slide scanner and the previous 8200i SE version is the color calibration function, for which it was specially equipped with a SilverFast Auto IT8 calibration template. It provides the scanning device with a unique color profile for maximum color fidelity. The model comes with 8th generation SilverFast software from the German company LaserSoft Imaging. The interface, together with the virtual assistant, guides the user step by step in setting up the process in full accordance with the task. Such a device costs 15 thousand more than SE, but it is used not only by amateurs, but also by professionals - photographers, designers and everyone who is demanding on the quality of photo enlargement.

Top 7. HP ScanJet Enterprise Flow 5000 s5
The scanner is designed to serve an office with an average document flow - up to 7500 pages / day. It not only digitizes RTF and PDF files, but also recognizes text, and the bundled software allows you to quickly edit and save it. This is not the case with more expensive devices.
- Price: 56230 rubles.
- Country: USA (made in China)
- Resolution: 600x600
- Interface: USB 3.0
- Colour: 48 bit
- Scanning time: 65 ppm

The accuracy, speed and performance of the device allow operation in medium complexity, and the built-in software products provide fast processing and archiving of text files. The text recognition and error detection function works quite accurately, however, filtering out colored backgrounds and other complex elements is sometimes buggy. Also, the device includes remote control, duplex scanning in 1 pass, work with business and plastic cards. At such a cost, the functionality is good, but due to the novelty of the model on the Russian market, user reviews are not enough to give it a higher rating.
- Affordable price for the company
- Ergonomic design
- Finding text in a working document
- 80 Sheet Auto Feed Tray
- Full set of proprietary software
- Sophisticated software for working with business cards
- Random paper jam

- Colour: 48 bit
- Scan time: 2 sec.
- Dimensions, weight: 292x152x161 mm, 3.4 kg
- Features: touch color display, proprietary ScanSnap Home software
Fujitsu ScanSnap iX1500 is useful when scanning is infrequent, it is not recommended to load it like a professional one. Under its hinged lid, there is a feeding unit for sources of various formats - from business cards (50.8x50.8 mm) to contracts 3000 mm long. The scanner is also capable of working with A3, B4 and Tabloid (279x432 mm), but only under manual control. The device borrowed its name from the technology of the same name, capable of performing many tasks with scanned images. In reviews, it is called one of the simplest and most convenient. Top 4. Brother ADS-1200
The Japanese company turned 110 years old in 2018 and is considered the market leader in the production of MFPs, printers and scanners for home and business.Brother's slogan translated into Russian sounds like "On your side", and the company's service policy corresponds to it.

The ADS-1200 is very handy for digitizing documents and due to its small size it fits easily on a table. Power comes directly from the USB 3.0 connector, so the scanner does not need to be connected to the mains - just connect it to a laptop and you can work when and where the user needs. Reviews about the device are positive. They write that documents can be processed in one go, and at once in stacks of 20 sheets. The automatic feeder is nimble, multi-page contracts and plastic ID-cards do not care for him. The device can also upload files to Dropbox or other cloud storage, but you need to sit a bit with the settings to figure it out. Fortunately, the model is popular, and enough reviews have been created on it.
- Automatic feed unit
- Advanced post-processing software
- Dedicated plastic card slot
- Transport to file, card or e-mail
- Cannot scan documents heavier than 80 g/m²
Top 3. Canon P-215II

- Interface: USB 2.0
- Colour: 24 bit
- Scan time: 6 sec.
- Dimensions, weight: 285x257x202 mm, 1 kg
- Features: power supply - optional, pre-installed software for installation
The portable device easily fits into a desk drawer, as well as a bag or backpack, making it indispensable for work trips. The kid copes with his tasks remarkably - he scans cleanly and quickly, a two-sided scan is done in one run as much in time as a one-sided one. Powered by USB, but if desired, the user can stock up on a power supply from the mains for a fee. Almost everyone in the reviews is satisfied with the ease of installation - all the necessary software is already in the model, so you can operate it even on your own computer, even on someone else's. But this scanner is not suitable for scanning photos due to the low resolution and color depth of 24 bits.
- Does not require driver installation
- duplex scanning
- Fits in a medium handbag
- Good performance
- Advanced settings via CaptureOnTouch
- Can "chew" paper
- See through the reverse side of the sheet
- No carrying case

All this saves a lot of space in the workplace. Users are satisfied with the quality of scanned materials, especially when set to the maximum resolution of 4800x4800 dpi. But when using this mode, you will have to wait about 10 minutes. At 1200 dpi, digitizing takes about a minute. Color depth 48 bits. In general, you can even scan photos - a non-professional will not notice serious flaws. You can only find fault with proprietary software. According to some reviews, on Windows XP and the latest versions of Windows 10 (Creators Update), there are problems installing and using utilities.
- Quick start without warm up
- No bulky power supply
- Offsite has software for Windows 10
- Can scan books and photo albums
- Lots of scan settings
- No off button
- Flimsy removable lid
Top 1. Canon CanoScan LiDE 400
The LiDE (LED Indirect Exposure) proprietary technology, which involves the use of small and energy-efficient RGB LEDs, makes the tablet device versatile, unpretentious and efficient, and therefore very popular.

- Colour: 48 bit
- Scan time: 8 sec.
- Dimensions, weight: 250x39x365 mm, 1.7 kg
- Features: Z-shaped cover, autocorrect source
Like all flatbed scanners, the device is compact and after the overall MFP on the desktop seems like a toy. The model is positioned as a premium class, appearance, build quality and materials are appropriate. Although the reviews still have complaints about the mechanism for attaching the lid, however, its design allows you to scan quite voluminous (up to 21 mm) documents. The device is controlled using 4 EZ buttons, a wider selection of settings is provided in the standard software. The scan quality is good, the colors are bright, but not everyone likes the color reproduction. You can try to customize it using the Auto Dust & Scratch Reduction and Fading Correction filters, but keep in mind that they are not available for macOS and Linux.
- High scan purity
- Easy to install software
- Claimed service life 5 years
- Automatic work with a stack of documents
- USB 3.0 cable included

How to choose a scanner
Choosing a scanner does not seem difficult to most users. However, there are a few important things to keep in mind:
- Scanner type. First, decide what you will be scanning. The feed scanner will only handle single sheets. Tablet can be "loaded" even with a massive book.
- Sensor type. CIS - scanners with this type of sensor are smaller, lighter, simpler and cheaper. But they have a low depth of field (the curves of a book can be digitized with poor sharpness). With the CCD-type, the situation is opposite. Great depth of field, good color reproduction and overall quality, but expensive and bulky.
- Auto sheet feed. Useful when scanning a large number of sheets (not books or magazines!). Load the pack into the tray and the automation will do the rest for you. Especially useful in offices.
- Maximum format. Decide in advance how large materials you will scan. Most scanners support A4 sheets. To scan A3 and above, you will have to look for special models.
- Supported operating systems. It's simple: there are 3 main operating systems - Windows, MacOS and Linux. Which one you use, that one should be supported by the scanner.
- Color depth. For home or office use, a 24-bit color model is sufficient. Professionals who scan photos for further processing are advised to take models with a color depth of 48 bits.
- Permission. And this characteristic depends on the scope. A 600-1200 dpi model is enough for home and work. Photo editors - from 2000 dpi and above.
