1. Power
How strong are the motors on rotary hammers?Power is one of the main parameters when choosing a power tool. It shows how strong the perforator is, but you can't just push off of it. Modern technology allows manufacturers to play with performance, and models with weaker motors are often found, but at the same time they have a higher impact force. Be that as it may, we will start from dry numbers. All of our participants do not go beyond 1 kilowatt, and the Deco puncher is closest to this threshold. It has 950 watts.
Another argument for placing Deco in the first place is a brushless rotor. This is a fairly new technology, found mainly in top models. Thanks to this design, the manufacturer gets the opportunity to reduce the size of the engine, but at the same time significantly increase its performance. Also, a brushless rotor is considered more reliable and of high quality.
We boldly give him the first place, but this step is shared with him by the instrument Caliber. It has a slightly weaker motor, 800 watts, but also quite a lot for a household tool. The second line of the pedestal is shared by: Bort, Sturm and Elitek. They have from 750 to 600 watts. And the weakest in this regard is Interskol, which has an engine of only 400 watts on board. But, looking ahead, let's say: despite such a weak motor, all the same tasks are available to this tool as to other nominees.
Caliber EP-800/26
The most powerful budget model
2. Impact force and modes
What is the impact energy and how many operating modes does the tool have? The force of impact, or rather its energy, is the most important parameter for a perforator. It is measured in joules and makes it clear with materials of what hardness the tool can handle. The higher this value, the better, and our comparison includes models whose energy does not exceed 4 joules. More powerful devices no longer fall into the budget segment.
Energy has a direct correlation with the number of hits. That is, a hammer drill with little power, but at the same time making more strokes per minute, will be almost the same in performance as a slower, but more powerful unit.
In the same nomination, we will place the number of operating modes, since they are directly related to each other. The maximum number of modes is 3: drilling, drilling with impact and just impact. Often, manufacturers exclude the third mode from the list, since the tool cannot perform it due to its other characteristics. For example, consider these parameters in the table:
Model | Impact energy (J) | Number of modes |
Interskol | 1,2 | 2 |
DEKO | 3,2 | 3 |
board | 3 | 3 |
Sturm | 2 | 2 |
Caliber | 3,2 | 3 |
Elitech | 2,3 | 3 |
Here we see a direct connection - punchers with an impact energy of up to 2 joules inclusive, do not have a chiselling mode. They just don't need him.Their low strength is compensated by revolutions, and this factor does not work when chiselling, so the manufacturer simply excludes it from the configuration. All other models work in three modes.
As for the distribution of places in the nomination, we think that it would be right to make three positions. We send Deco, Caliber and Bort to the first one, since they have 3 or more joules of energy and 3 modes of operation each. Elitek takes the second step with three modes, but a rather weak blow. And the third line is shared by Interskol and Sturm.
3. Number of strokes and revolutions
How many beats per minute does a puncher make?As mentioned above, the number of blows has a direct relationship with their strength and engine power. This setting is able to compensate for a small amount of joules of energy, increasing tool performance. Unfortunately, the tool does not have such a thing as productivity or efficiency, since it is difficult to calculate, so it would be right to simply take the number of strokes per minute as a basis, and based on these figures, identify the winner.
Just when choosing a puncher, you should always keep in mind that this value is not independent and depends on other characteristics. For example, from engine speed. It is easy to understand that a tool that initially rotates slowly will not be able to strike many blows, that is, these two values are inextricably linked, and it makes sense to give a comparative table:
Model | beats per minute | RPM |
Elitech | 6100 | 1200 |
Caliber | 4000 | 900 |
Sturm | 3900 | 850 |
board | 4850 | 1050 |
DEKO | 4860 | 870 |
Interskol | 7500 | 1650 |
So, the fastest, and therefore the best puncher from our list, is Interskol. He has 7.4 thousand beats per minute. Here is a clear example of how a manufacturer compensates for 1.2 joules of impact energy. We give the first place to this participant and send Elitek here. It is a little slower, 6.1 thousand, but also very fast.
The second place is shared by Board and Deco with almost equal characteristics. This is something in between, that is, the most balanced parameters, especially if they are correlated with the criterion of impact energy and engine power. That is, here the manufacturers did not become wiser and experiment, but simply made all the parameters averaged. Well, there is logic and sense in this. As for the third place, we have Caliber and Sturm there. It cannot be said that they are worse, but we are looking at specific numbers, and these models have the lowest ones, which is why such a position.
Interskol P-18/450ER
The best ratio of price and quality
4. Drilling diameter
What size hole can be drilled with a hammer drill? If you have a house in whose walls you need to drill a hole with a diameter of more than 30 millimeters, then you have started a large-scale renovation and you need more powerful equipment. We are considering an inexpensive tool, in which this parameter is limited not even to 30, but to 26 millimeters. On average, homework does not require more.
The maximum diameter is often indicated by the manufacturer directly in the name of the tool. This is one of the numbers. For example, Interskol P-18/450ER has 18 millimeters, and Kalibr EP-800/26 has 26, respectively. But not all brands enter this value. Bort BHD-700-P and Sturm RH2550, for example, do not have it.
It is worth noting here that the drilling diameter is a conditional parameter. It is indicated by the manufacturer for an approximate understanding of the capabilities of the tool. That is, it is a certain squeeze from other parameters, and it is not strict. Also, this value applies to concrete, and not other materials. Often in the description you can see the characteristics of the diameter of drilling in wood and metal, but they are even more conditional and, for example, our nominees have exactly the same values, while the “concrete” values differ.
There will be only two positions in this nomination, since it makes no sense to scrupulously divide the participants by calculating each millimeter. On the first line we leave: Caliber (26 mm), Elitek (24 mm), Bort (24 mm) and Deco (24 mm). And the second place is shared by Shturm (20 mm) and Interskol (18 mm).
5. Reverse type
What is the reverse mechanism?Reverse is turning the engine in the opposite direction. It is necessary to pull out the drill if it is stuck in the hole. There are several types of reverse mechanisms that differ in convenience and quality:
slider. It looks like a slider placed on the top of the case. A fairly reliable option that changes the polarity of the motor. Among the shortcomings of the slide reverse, inconvenience can be distinguished. To change the mode, you need to release the tool and switch.
Flag. The simplest and most convenient reverse mechanism. It looks like a small checkbox directly above the start button. Its main advantage is convenience, as you can change the mode without releasing the handle of the tool. But fragility is its main drawback. This is the most unreliable option, but even when replacing it, it will be quite cheap.
brush. One of the most progressive reversers, which does not work by changing the polarity of the rotor, like others, but by shifting the brushes. This is the most reliable and high-quality option, but with low maintainability. If the slider or flag can be completely replaced with your own hands, it is better to immediately contact specialists with a brush reverse.
Also exists geared reverse This is the best option for a puncher, but since we are considering an inexpensive tool, it is not found in our nominees.
Drawing conclusions, we can say that the best option is a brush reverse. Among our participants, Interskol and Caliber have it. We give them first place in the nomination. Deco and Bort use flag switches, and Elitek uses sliders. Since they practically do not differ in terms of the principle of operation and reliability, we will send these models to the second line.
But Sturm stood out here, and from a very negative side. He has no reverse at all, and this is a huge minus. It is not clear why the manufacturer decided to do this and deprived their product of a very important and simple design option, but for this we consider it right to lower the rating by a whole point.
6. Options
What extras does the tool have?Additional options may affect the usability of the tool and its safety at the time of overload.Options such as soft start and vibration compensation are very important for a rock drill, but since we are considering a budget segment, none of our participants have these options. Their set is rather modest, but it is still different:
Model | Functions |
Interskol P-18/450ER | Speed regulator; Safety clutch; Button blocker. |
DEKO DKH950W 063-4120 | Safety clutch; Button blocker. |
Bort BHD-700-P | Speed regulator; Button blocker. |
Sturm RH2550 | Speed regulator; Safety clutch; Button blocker. |
Caliber EP-800/26 | Button blocker. |
Elitech P 0724 REM | Button blocker. |
A very important parameter in this modest list is the presence of a speed controller. This option allows you to set exactly the rotor speed that you need. The function is really very important and necessary, but only three nominees have it: Interskol, Bort and Sturm. Feel free to send them to the first line of the pedestal.
The safety clutch is a protective mechanism that prevents the rotor from failing if the tool is overloaded excessively. It takes on all the load at the moment when the drill bites into the wall of the house, and simply collapses, keeping the engine and even the brushes intact.
We will give Deco a third place, since it does not have the ability to regulate speed. And Elitek and Caliber become outsiders, equipped with only one option - blocking the power button. This is such an insignificant mechanism that, in theory, it could not even be considered, but in this case, these participants would not have any convenient functions at all.
Bort BHD-700-P
The most reliable hammer drill
7. Equipment
What comes with the perforator? If you take a hammer drill into the house and do not plan to work with it all the time, you want the tool to be as complete as possible and you don’t have to buy anything for it. Unfortunately, you will have to buy more, as some of our participants have very poor equipment:
Model | Equipment |
Interskol P-18/450ER | Case; Lever; Limiter. |
DEKO DKH950W 063-4120 | Case; Lever; Limiter. |
Bort BHD-700-P | Lever; Limiter; Brushes. |
Sturm RH2550 | Lever; Limiter; brushes; 2 drills; Lubricant; Turnkey cartridge. |
Caliber EP-800/26 | Case; Lever; Limiter. |
Elitech P 0724 REM | Case; Lever; Limiter. |
In this nomination, I was pleasantly surprised by the Shturm perforator. Although it comes without a plastic case, it already comes with 2 drills of different diameters and lubricant for them. In addition, the leader put a turnkey cartridge in the package if you want to use the hammer drill as a drill, which is very important for the home. That is, this is the best household option, immediately ready for work.
Other manufacturers were stingy to put drills, but they supply tools in cases. These are Interskol, Deco, Caliber and Elitek. It’s also nice, because you don’t have to look for a box to store the puncher. In addition, in the house it allows you to save space when storing tools. And the most modest set offers Bort. It comes without a case or any accessories. But here put spare brushes. It's nice, but they will only be needed very soon, and possibly never, and they cost mere pennies on the market.
Sturm RH2550
Rich equipment
8. Length of cable
How many meters of wire do punchers have?If it seems to you that this parameter does not matter much, then you have never worked with a network tool for a long time. In fact, this is a very important aspect that most manufacturers love to save on. During operation, a short cable leads to the fact that you have to constantly carry a carrier with you or drill with a taut wire, which is also inconvenient. In general, if you want a tool that is easy to work with, be sure to look at the length of the network cable.
As for our participants, Interskol has the longest wire. Whole 4 meters. This is the best result that competitors have not come close to. In addition, the cable of the perforator is soft, albeit thick. It does not interfere during operation and does not tangle during storage. Definitely first place. The second line is for Deco and Elitek. There are 3 meters, which is also good. But the rest of the nominees are equipped with a wire of only 2 meters. They will have to be carried, which means that they constantly experience inconvenience during work, especially at height.
9. The weight
How much does the tool weigh?Another aspect that affects only usability. The lighter the tool, the better, and this is especially felt when working at height or the more outstretched arms. Interskol has the lightest tool, which is not surprising given its technical parameters. It weighs only 1.8 kilograms. On the second line there are 4 participants at once: Deco, Bort, Sturm and Elitek. They weigh a little less than three kilograms, which is also quite acceptable. But the heaviest tool in Caliber. Almost 4 kilos. It will not be very convenient to work with him.
10. Price
How much do perforators cost?Since we are considering an inexpensive segment, all our participants are within 5 thousand rubles. This is the average cost across the market, and of course some sellers may ask for more, but we take the average cost for the most popular marketplaces:
Model | Price, rub.) |
Interskol P-18/450ER | 4 200 |
DEKO DKH950W 063-4120 | 3 200 |
Bort BHD-700-P | 3 000 |
Sturm RH2550 | 4 000 |
Caliber EP-800/26 | 3 200 |
Elitech P 0724 REM | 2 800 |
As you can see, the price tags of our participants are almost the same. This is not surprising, since we selected models with similar parameters for comparison. But the most budget option is Elitek, whose price is even less than 3 thousand rubles. It makes sense to send Caliber, Deco and Bort to the second line. They cost more than 3, but less than 4 thousand. And the most expensive are Interskol and Shturm. Accordingly, only the third position.
Elitech P 0724 REM
Best price
11. Comparison results
Best budget home rotary hammers by average score across all comparison criteriaModel | Total score | Number of wins by criteria | Winner in nominations |
DEKO DKH950W 063-4120 | 4.3 | 3/10 | Power; Impact force and modes; Drilling diameter. |
Interskol P-18/450ER | 4.2 | 5/10 | Number of strokes and revolutions; reverse type; Additional options; Length of cable; The weight. |
Elitech P 0724 REM | 4.2 | 3/10 | Number of strokes and revolutions; drilling diameter; Price. |
Bort BHD-700-P | 4.1 | 3/10 | Impact force and modes; drilling diameter; Additional options. |
Caliber EP-800/26 | 4.1 | 4/10 | Power; Impact force and modes; drilling diameter; Reverse type. |
Sturm RH2550 | 3.4 | 2/10 | Additional options; Equipment. |
Despite the final score obtained after calculating the points for the nominations, we consider it right to give the first place to two participants: Interskol P-18/450ER and DEKO DKH950W 063-4120. In terms of performance, they are very similar, but they achieve their result in different ways. Deco is a slower but stronger instrument, while Interskol is fast but weaker in impact energy. In addition, these are proven brands that have been on the market for a long time and with a positive reputation. The reliability of both is top notch.
The rest of the participants can be safely sent to the second step of the pedestal. It cannot be said that any of these rotary hammers is the best, but they are all as balanced as possible and with an optimal set of characteristics and options. Choosing from this list, it is worth looking at what you need. The caliber is more powerful and resistant to any kind of load. But Sturm is already sold with drills and one more cartridge.
