1. Protection
What does impregnation protect from? The tree is subject to a lot of "diseases", let's call them that. Depending on whether you are doing outdoor or indoor work, these diseases can be different. Indoors, the tree is afraid of moisture. After it is absorbed, swelling or, worse, rotting begins. A bug may appear at the base and over time it will simply eat the tree from the inside.
Classic impregnation does not have fire protection, and if the manufacturer tries to convince you otherwise, be aware that this is a hoax and simple marketing. In order to make wood refractory, special compounds are used. They are applied before impregnation and decorative processing.
Impregnation should protect against these adversities, but each composition has its own functions and features. In this nomination, Krona wins. It is biocidal, that is, it protects the wood from decay and does not allow beetles and fungi to settle in it. Also it is water repellent. If you have a bath and you are planning interior work, then this is the best mixture. The second place is shared by Tikkurila and Belinka. They do not have moisture protection, but they protect the surface from exposure to sunlight and ultraviolet radiation. They can cover the fence or facade. The tree will not dry out under the scorching sun. All other participants share the third place. They are biocidal, and this is their only claimed property.
2. Consumption
How much impregnation do you need?Consumption is an important parameter. Impregnation is not a cheap pleasure, and the less it is required, the better. Manufacturers indicate the minimum and maximum flow rates. They depend on how you apply the composition, as well as on the type of surface. So, a processed smooth board, for example, a decorative lining, will take less impregnation than an ordinary log.
brand | Minimum flow (m2/l) | Maximum flow (m2/l) |
Belinka Tophybrid 4 | 9 | 25 |
KRONA Tonotex | 6 | 13 |
Pinotex Ultra | 7 | 12 |
TEKNOS WOODEX BASE | 4 | 10 |
Tikkurila Valtti Expert | 5 | 10 |
AQUATEX Viking | 6 | 20 |
It is important to make a reservation that the number of square meters of area, which will take 1 liter of impregnation, is measured. That is, the higher the values, the better. And they win in the nomination Belinka and Aquatex. They have enough liters for more than 20 squares. The rest of the participants are more modest.
Belinka Tophybrid 4
The most economical impregnation
3. Application method
What tool can be used to apply the composition? There are many ways to apply paints and impregnations. The most accessible is a brush. It is also the most economical. With a brush, you can get into hard-to-reach places and gently process the joints. If you need to cover a large flat surface, a roller will do. It will make the process go faster. Well, the fastest is the sprayer.
It should be understood that the impregnation consumption also depends on which application method is chosen. The manufacturer indicates the average values, and you should not start from them.If you're trying to coat, say, a baluster on a staircase with a spray gun, get ready to spend a lot of material.
The application method also depends on the density of the composition. Yes, all impregnations are dilutable, but there are often limitations. For example, some brands cannot be applied with a spray gun. Simply put, the best impregnation is the one that can be applied in the maximum number of ways. We have Krona and Tikkurila. Their manufacturers make it possible to choose a tool from a brush to a spray gun.
The second place will be given to Teknos and Aquatex. Brushes and sprayers are available for them, but it is not recommended to use a roller. Not the most serious limitation, which cannot be said about the Belinka and Pinotex brands. They cannot be sprayed with a spray bottle.

The best protection
4. Drying
How long does it take for the impregnation to dry?The drying speed largely depends on the composition of the impregnation and what thinners are used. The longest drying mixtures are pentaphthalic, that is, oil-based. They are diluted with white spirit, which itself is greasy. And nitro mixtures dry the fastest. They evaporate almost instantly. Hence, water occupies an intermediate result. You should also look at how much the next layer can be applied. That is, two drying parameters are important, as well as the number of possible layers, and we will compare them.
brand | Full dry time | Time between layers | Recommended number of layers |
Belinka Tophybrid 4 | 6 o'clock | 2 hours | 2-3 |
KRONA Tonotex | 20 o'clock | 10 o'clock | 2 |
Pinotex Ultra | 3 o'clock | 0.5 h | 2-3 |
TEKNOS WOODEX BASE | 16 o'clock | 1 hour | 2 |
Tikkurila Valtti Expert | 2 hours | 4 hours | 2 |
AQUATEX Viking | 24 hours | 4 hours | 3 |
So, the impregnation from Tikkurila dries the fastest. But there is an interesting feature here - it is recommended to apply the second layer at least 4 hours after the first. In fact, after 2 hours, complete drying does not occur. Just the composition of the mixture is such that it ceases to be felt tactile. In any case, the result is very good, so the first place. Like Pinotex, which also has a nitro base and dries within 3 hours after application.
We will give the second place to Belinka impregnation. Something in between the winners and losers of this nomination. Well, the third place belongs to the compositions of Krona, Teknos and Aquatex. They will have to wait almost a day after application to completely dry. It is especially bad if you decide to cover a fence or facade with it. During this time, a lot of dirt and dust will stick to it.

5. Diluent
What solvent is used?It is believed that the safest mixtures are acrylic and water-dispersion. Allegedly due to the fact that they use water, there are much fewer harmful components. Actually, it doesn't matter. Even the most toxic petroleum-based solvent will completely erode after drying. The diluent here is used to obtain uniformity of the composition. For example, nitro dyes and impregnations dry very quickly, and this is their main advantage.
If we talk about the quality of the final coating, then the best result will be shown by mixtures based on pentaphthal, that is, oil. They are the strongest and most durable. They penetrate deep into the structure of the tree and do not destroy it, but at the same time create maximum protection at the level of the fibers.
If the manufacturer specifies a recommended brand of solvent, try to stick to it. Such mixtures are maximally adapted, and only in this case the quality declared by the brand can be guaranteed.
Simply put, the first place in this nomination is occupied by participants with an oily structure, that is, diluted with white spirit. We have Krona and Tikkurila. The second line is for mixtures using a solvent: Teknos and Pinotex. Well, the third one is at Belinka, which is generally not recommended to be diluted, and Aquatex, diluted with ordinary water.
6. Best before date
How long can the impregnation be used?Outdoor work is recommended to be carried out regularly. The tree requires constant care in order for it to retain its qualities. The problem is that, having bought some product of a certain color, composition or brand today, in a year it may not be on sale, as it will be discontinued. Therefore, many try to have a supply of paint or impregnation, but not all mixtures are able to maintain performance for a long time.
The expiration date applies only to containers that meet the requirements for storage. So, the jar should always be hermetically sealed. Not even a small amount of air is allowed.
Of course, the best impregnation is the one that will stand in the bank for the maximum amount of time. We have Teknos and Krona. Both can be used for 4 years. And this is after you have used the jar and then closed it tightly. The second line is for all other participants in the comparison. They will remain operational for 3 years.

7. Tara
In what container is impregnation supplied? In different cases, you will need a different amount of impregnation. And the more packaging options the manufacturer offers, the better. For example, for small jobs, a liter jar is enough. But if you decide to paint the fence, it is more profitable to take a large bucket right away. In addition, the larger the container, the cheaper the product.
In this nomination, the brands supplied in the largest number of various volumes win. These are Aquatex, Tikkurila, Pinotex and Krona impregnations. They can be bought both in a small liter jar and in a bucket weighing 10 kilograms. Belinka's packaging is a little more modest. There are cans of 1 and 2 liters, and this is a small variety, so only a second place. Well, the outsider is the impregnation of the Teknos brand. It is available only in liter containers, so if you decide to cover the fence with it, get ready to buy a huge number of cans.
8. Color Options
What is the color palette? The wood itself looks attractive, but if you, for example, have a bath that you want to make in dark colors, you will have to look for the appropriate wood, oak, mahogany, and so on. There is no need to talk about their red shades at all. With them, your bath will become truly golden. Fortunately, ordinary impregnation can completely change the color of wood. Some brands already have a ready-made palette, and some can be tinted at your discretion.
If you decide to tint the impregnation, it is better to contact a special workshop where you will find the right ratio. You choose a color and you have a ready-made recipe, so if you later need the exact same shade, you can easily repeat it.
The tinting option is the most successful, since you yourself choose the shade and even its saturation. Among our nominees, this is only one brand - Krona. It is initially colorless and can be tinted. It even has its own brand palette. The second line is shared by Belinka, Pinotex, Tikkurila and Aquatex. They are already tinted and all have approximately the same set of colors. The third place is occupied by Teknos alone. It is a colorless impregnation that cannot be tinted. That is, it is exclusively protective and has no decorative function.
9. Price
How much does impregnation cost?To avoid confusion, we will consider prices for 1 liter, even if the impregnation itself is not sold in such a bank.
brand | Price per liter (rub.) |
Belinka Tophybrid 4 | 1370 |
KRONA Tonotex | 407 |
Pinotex Ultra | 1410 |
TEKNOS WOODEX BASE | 1850 |
Tikkurila Valtti Expert | 970 |
AQUATEX Viking | 640 |
As you can see, the price gap is huge. Krona and Aquatex definitely win. These are the cheapest brands in comparison. The second place is taken by Tikkurila, Belinka and Pinotex. Well, the most expensive impregnation is Teknos. For a liter jar, you will have to pay almost 2 thousand.

Belinka Tophybrid 4 | 3.88 | 1/10 | Application method. |
TEKNOS WOODEX BASE | 3.55 | 1/10 | Best before date. |
It does not matter what kind of work you are planning, external or internal. If a tree is present, the best impregnation is Krona. It has a lot of protective features. It can be applied both with a brush and a spray, but at the same time it costs quite adequate money. The impregnation of Tikkurila is not far behind. Yes, the brand with worldwide fame and reputation lived up to expectations, although it did not reach the first place a little.
Other participants should not be discounted either. All have their advantages and disadvantages. They just have slightly different purposes. For example, the comparison outsider - TEKNOS WOODEX BASE - is the best colorless protection against fungus, mold and bugs. A great option if you have a wooden bath. Although quite expensive.
